The Project Wall 2012

Since opening in 2006 James Dorahy Project Space has presented a number of project shows, selected on a merit basis, that are in line with the aim of the exhibition program. The project shows have allowed the gallery to foster new talent and to select artists to join the gallery. As an extension of this successful approach and to celebrate the past 6 years of projects, the gallery is pleased to introduce The Project Wall – located in the stockroom will which allow the gallery to present more artists to its audience of collectors, curators and artists.
Gabrielle Courtenay’s Journey to ‘no man’s land’ will be the inaugural The Project Wall show.

In her new Wunderkammer Series titled ‘Journey to ‘no man’s land’ Gabrielle Courtenay has created a large 2D ‘cabinet of curiosities’ playing with the notions of wonder, curiosity and the concept of the exotic ‘the charm of the unfamiliar’. Courtenay combines symbols and imagery that are both historical and autobiographical to tell a tale of exploration, navigation and encounters.
The tale reflects on both the harshness of the journey, the shock of the new strange world and the impact then and now on its indigenous first peoples and land, with competing concepts of beauty and culture. It is an unfinished story that the viewers must complete by adding their own sense of curiosity, memory and creativity.

WUNDERKAMMER SERIES Block Projects Melbourne 1-15th September

Following the exhibition of ‘Journey to no man’s land’ artwork composed of multiple assembled painted canvas panels on The Project Wall at James Dorahy Project Space Potts Point Sydney. I had Cam Neville from Storm Imaging print my “Wunderkammer Series'“ limited edition giclee prints. These were exhibited at Block Projects in Melbourne in September that year in their Gallery 2 with Melbourne artist Robert Jacks’s Solo exhibition in Gallery 1.
